The animal is the real deep-sea jellyfish Atolla wyvillei, exactly as in the photo, image 1, stylized for animation: a small soft bell like a shallow dome, deep red, with a ribbed, scalloped rim of many small lobes like the edge of a cog, a dark maroon stomach visible in its centre, and many long thin reddish tentacles trailing behind it, plus one longer trailing tentacle. Size: a real Atolla is about 10–15 cm across — no bigger than a saucer, smaller than Kira's helmet.
It floats in pitch-black water at 4000 m, close to the camera in the centre of the frame. It glows with its own bioluminescence: a ring of small bright BLUE lights sits right on the lobed rim of the bell itself and pulses around it like a running chain of sparks; the soft blue glow lights the red bell a little. In the lower left and right corners, out of focus and much larger because they are closer, the edges of two clear bubble helmets with their white puck lamps (Kira lower left, Yan higher right); their white beams fall on the jellyfish, fine dust specks glitter only inside the beams. Everything else is black.
