Make the viperfish much SMALLER: total length only as long as Yan's forearm plus hand (about 30 cm), slim and eel-like (look of image 3), its head smaller than Yan's hand, placed right in the beam about one arm's length in front of Yan's hand. Its body is jerked into a sharp startled S-curve, small jaws open, eyes squinting in the bright light; not monstrous, kid-friendly.
